Is offering a seat to a lady in a crowded bus against gender

by Amit alias AKG » Fri Apr 18, 2003 11:53 am

Well, this is the topic not created by me but has been discussed in rediff very heavily. But I like Hyderabad especially because it is one of the few cities in India where I have seen that guys give seats to girls pretty easily and without even asking.

What I feel is that Gender Equality is one thing and giving seats to a women in a crowded bus is another.

No offence whatsoever, but there is a distinct divide between the male and female commuters in the bus. The first few rows of seats are marked \"Ladies\" and the back seats are mandatorily occupied by the \"stronger sex\" of the species. Hence the question in contention is not a valid one, as the term \"gender equality\" is being ravaged by this system. Generally, a \"guy\" forgoes his seat only when he is sitting in the other teritory and succumbs to the sharp, pierceful glances from the rightful squatter of the seat. Like I said, no offence ...

I agree... But what I meant was that some people still feel that it\'s not right to get up from that seat... or from other seat, because it is like \"Against Gender Equality\". When we believe that the fairer sex is equal, then why should we have to get up? Though I am against this feeling.

I am definitely for giving a seat as it is the basic respect you can show for a human being who is in need.

Dear ABC, if you are in a gents\' seat and another male is standing, would you get up coz he\'s human too? Let\'s stop bullshitting... Why are females given two tickets at most theaters whereas men are given only one?

Giving seats for ladies? I strongly oppose that. I used to give seats to ladies, but this incident really changed me. I was traveling from Mehidipatnam to Uppal, I stood for 30min and at last got a seat. Then in the next stop a lady caught the same bus and started demanding me to get up and give her the seat (I was seating in the gents\' seat just behind ladies\' seat). How ridiculous! Also they don\'t get noticed by the police even when they ride triples on a bike... See, helping old people in bus is a must you have to do, but we should not encourage this for other ladies. Don\'t you think they are taking advantage of our culture... Yeah, definitely they do! As far as these people like ABC (who treat women as human beings) are there, they enjoy their freedom.

I think we are trying to mix up two issues here... One is simple humanity (admitting that girls are physically weak) and the second is of Gender Equality.
Try to be equal to them in those areas where they are equal. Otherwise from the next time onwards you will say that there shd be no separate Wimbledon for women and men, that they shd compete in same tournament. I think we have taken gender equality in its narrowest sense.

I believe that giving up your seat for a lady, is plain and simple chivalry! Its manners, which incidentally very few people have. Now... dividing the seats in a bus into two for men and women is sad. And it shows how uncivilized we actually are!!!
As for Gender Equality... I believe in India its a myth!

I think this is a trivial issue. Whether you get up when you see a lady standing is purely left to you. But yes, I would get up when I see anyone (whether lady or a gentleman holding a baby, or carrying too many things or appears to be reaaly tired and struggling to stand). To start with we should do away with the reservation of ladies seats. Seats are reserved for physically challenged. So, when seats are reserved for ladies does that mean they are physically inadequate??? No, definitely not. The Government started this practise because chivalrous men (or simple humanity) are fast becoming an endangered commodity!
Coming to a serious issue: Wages for women. Why does a woman construction worker paid less than a man when she toils and does the same job in sweltering heat??? Meaning to say, we are striving for gender equality but our priorities are wrong. Seats and Cinema tickets - I don\'t think any lady would care for equality in these aspects! As for women given two tickets at the Cinema houses, most of them actually stopped it. They do only when the lady requests (saying she has her hubby or a child). This is for men: So next time when you are at a Cinema house, ask for two tickets saying you have a wife and see what would be the response;)
