I believe most people will agree that we are moving towards a global world where effective communication will be prime to moving forward. Whether it is English or French, is a determinate factor based on who\'s doing better globally in terms business and economics. The fact that there are three countries that speak English in the G-8 group of countries, and that the world\'s largest superpower speaks English are clearly the reasons for English to be more universal than it ever was. If for instance, Japan or France ended up dominating the global economics, people would have taken upto learning French or Japanese. Schools would have perhaps taught the language to students hoping they\'d leverage their skills in the future. Let me give you an example - take Australia, a country with traditionally European values, but geographically, well isolated from them. For them to survive in the Asian environs, they needed to blend in. There are more Australians that speak Japanese now than ever - it is also interesting since, they would have traditionally taken up a European language to learn. Humans need to adapt to their surroundings to survive. Change is inevitable. It is, and always will be extremely difficult to work against the winds of change. As Indians we have a definite advantage having been exposed to the British Empire and having English taught in schools. It is important that we leverage this advantage and move forward, rather than complaining of western languages influencing cultural traditions and diluting values. The English were a part of our cultural history - whether good or bad. It\'s time to move on and build on what we have.
