Rape of women, rape of country, only in India!
By Jay Dubashi

16 Sep, 2002

A female student of the Delhi University was stalked in a Blueline bus last week in the capital. To escape the molestation attempt, she jumped off the running bus and almost broke her leg. Although there were about twenty passengers in the bus, nobody helped her. The same thing happened in Mumbai a few weeks earlier when a small girl was raped in a suburban train as other passengers watched.Nobody came to her help and the rapist jumped off the train and vanished.

Are Indians a cowardly lot? How can grown men watch their sisters and daughters being molested and raped in broad daylight and in public places, without lifting a finger to help them? But this is happening in India all the time, and that too in crowded cities like Delhi and Mumbai. You can only wonder what must be the state of affairs in grim villages in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, where women are treated as commodities, far less precious than cattle. The question I asked was: are Indians a cowardly lot? My answer is: yes, we are a cowardly lot and the richer and more modern we become the more cowardly and selfish we get.

Because we are a sophisticated lot, we always try to conceal our cowardice under a high-minded mantle. This is what Arjuna did on the battlefield in Kurukshetra. He said he simply could not bring himself to fight his cousins and uncles, because he was in two minds about fighting them. I don\'t think so. In my view, and I could be wrong, he was acting in a cowardly manner and poor Lord Krishna had to harangue him for days before he could bring himself to do what he should have done in the first place.

Then there was Mahatma Gandhi. I have always suspected that his non-violence was nothing but a cover for our cowardice. He knew that Indians would not fight the British because they were cowards. He said so in so many words. The Hindus,he said, were cowards and the Muslims bullies. He was dead right. We Hindus are cowards because we are,I think, very selfish. And this selfishness has become our dharma.

This is not so in other countries, certainly not in the west. In America, if two people start fighting in a public place, they are quickly separated and sent on their way, not by the police but by ordinary people. In India, on other hand, if two people are seen fighting, the others watch them, but do nothing. Even policemen do nothing but watch, though it is their job to stop all fights. Why are we so selfish? Because most of us are concerned only with the self.

Ninety per cent of our scriptures are concerned with the self: how to keep ourselves pure, how to relate oneself to God, etc etc.

There is little in the scriptures about relating oneself with others in the society. We are so much obsessed with the self and so much in search of personal Mukti and salvation, that we have no time for others.

In fact, we don\'t consider others as human beings. For us, only our family members or members of our caste count. To us, everybody is an outsider unless he is related to us. If a woman is being harassed in public, we behave as if it had nothing to do with us, because we do not know the woman. She is not a member of our society because we do not really accept the existence of society. To us, a man is not a social animal, but only a soul waiting for salvation. And since he is not a social animal, he has nothing to do with me and I have nothing to do with him.

It is out of this selfishness that cowardice is born. It is both spiritual as well as the usual kind of selfishness. I have seen well dressed people in Kolkota, coming out of restaurants and clubs after a hearty meal and stepping on dead corpses in Park Street on their way to company limousiness. The Bengalis are among the most cultured people in India. But they habitually behave in a cruel manner with their fellow beings.

The more cultured types believe that they are closer to the westerners who once ruled Kolkata, than their own people in the city. This is why Kolkota is so dirty a city, with few civic facilities. When scores of children died recently in a government-run hospital in Kolkota, even the government did not take the matter seriously.

We are so selfish that only money and power are dear to us, and we do anything to retain them by book or by crook. Only two or three ICS men resigned from the service before independence and, as far as I know, not a single member of the Imperial Police Service. Why give up a cushy job for something nebulous called indepen-dence? There were at least half dozen Nehrus in ICS and other senior civil services. But no one resigned. After independence, they all became secretaries to government, though they were the most obedient servants of the British.

The same thing happened during the Emergency. Most of us collaborated with Mrs Gandhi\'s regime, and some, like Jagmohan, were so scared that they went out of their way to cultivate Sanjay & Co, though that was not at all called for. The same Jagmohan is now a senior member of the BJP government, and does what he is told to do, just as he did when Sanjay Gandhi was ruling the roost.

When the twin towers were attacked in New York on September 11th last year, a plane on the way to Washington was hijacked by a group of terrorists. Had it happened in India, not a single Indian would have dared to stand up to the rascals. But when the passengers in the US plane came to know that the plane was hijacked, they confronted the hijackers and fought with them, though they knew their attempts were doomed to failure. They shouted \"Let\'s roll\" and fell upon the hijackers, though it was no use. The plane could not reach Washington and went down in a field about two hundred miles from Washington, and the capital was saved. Look at the way we are reacting to the American takeover of India. Vajpayee & Co have been working silently for four years now to hand over this country to United States.

This will, of course, benefit some people, as it has already done. Some people have made so much money out of the US takeover of India that they do not know what to do with it. But hundreds of millions of Indians have suffered badly, because of liberalisation and globalisation. Millions of people have lost their jobs and incomes. Hundreds of factories have closed down in Mumbai alone.

But most Indians are behaving as if nothing is happening. There are no processions, no strikes, no agitations, no nothing. People are damn scared to raise their voices. Even the communists are silent, some of them happy to make appearances on TV channels. We have new types of leaders now, they TV pussycats. Instead of holding demonstrations, they mouth a few words on TV and think they have done their day\'s work. They are happy, the channels are happy and the government is happy. Why this indifference to what I would call the rape of India in the name of globalisation? Because we simply don\'t have the guts to stand up to the government. The government knows this, which is why it turns the screws on anyone who raises his or her voice.

A correspondent of Time News magazine writes a nasty piece on Vajpayee in his magazine, and the government comes down on him like a ton of bricks. The Tehelka people show a BJP president taking cash from their correspondent and the government harasses them no end. But what does the press do? Nothing.

They do not even raise their voice. Are they cowards? Yes, they are cowards. They have their own interests to safeguard free trips, low-rent bungalows and invitations of visits to White House and No 10 Downing Street. And there is always money to be made here and there, which you can\'t do in India, if you are a marked man or woman in the government\'s eye.

The cowards who watched a small girl being raped in a Mumbai train have very good reasons for their behaviour. They were all going to their offices and their jobs would be at stake if they were late. They are the only wage-earners in their families and if anything happened to them, their families would be on the streets. So on and on. These are not reasons, they are excuses.

Some of them would probably write letters to the editor, berating the rapist, and berating the crowd of men who did nothing while the poor thing was being raped. But this is what everybody does after the event. At the time of the atrocity, they would do nothing, because cowards never do anything, but watch others committing atrocities. The self always comes first your family, your job, your promotions, your bank account. Everything else is secondary.

We have become a gutless, selfish and corrupt society. These things go together. The combination of all the three leads to cowardice. It is, of course, possible that we are gutless, selfish and corrupt because we are cowards. Of course, we don\'t call ourselves cowards. We call ourselves non-violent. We have raised non-violence to a higher philoso-phy, though to me it is nothing but cowardice.

It is cowardice that is keeping us out of our own Kashmir. We should have invaded Pakistan long ago and bombed Musharraf out of existence. This what America did, when a couple of planes crashed into the twin towers and brought them down with thousands of dead men and women in them. The Americans did not say, how can we attack Afghanistan, we have no proof.

They could have done that, for there is still no actual proof that it was Osama bin Laden who was behind the attack. But the American did not wait for proofs. They bombarded Afghanistan into dust and warned everybody around, including India, that they would meet the same fate if they dared to venture into the US skies and meddle with their skyscrapers.

After September 11th, we have lost our sovereignty and independence. Every time Advani begs of George W Bush to do this and do that for we are always begging before the Americans I feel like laughing. What has America to do with Kashmir? America did not ask our permission before it struck Afghanistan and will not ask for our permission before it strikes Iraq which it will do very soon.

Of course, America is a superpower, and we are nothing. But how did it become a superpower? Because it is not a cowardly nation. Whatever you may say about the Americans, they are certainly a courageous lot. And even God has a fascination for the brave.

Let us forget Gandhi, Lest us forget non-violence. Let us, for a change, be violent in our own cause. How long are we going to wait for others to do what we should do ourselves? How long are we going to watch young girls and old women being raped and killed, before we take the law into our own hands and teach the rascals a lesson? How long are we going to wait for others to solve our problems? The world has nothing but contempt for cowards, which is what we have become. Today, it is the rape of a small girl. Tomorrow it will be the rape of the nation. Where will it end?

You have the time patience and inclination to write about this one rape...just read the reports of the Gujarat massacre where young girls and women were raped in front of their family and then cut into pieces and thrown into a fire...And this was carried out by terrorists from religious organisations..Gangs of 15-25 men...What do you have to say about that Mr.?????????

Awesome message, encapsulating most of my thoughts. You are very much right on the \'I-dont-care\' attitude of Indians, moreso with their cowardly behavior I have seen in abundance. It will take more letters like yours and maybe a few generations before Indians stand up for others and stand up for themselves.

Truthseeker, YES, our whole nation is COWARD. Otherwise they would have got up and at least tried to stop the riots, killings and rapes of hundreds and thousands of innocent people. We are kids of coward FATHERS. Those days are not too far when we will see our own mothers and sisters get raped in front of us and we will not do anything about it because we got in a habit of putting the blame on politicians. Any riot, any attrocity happens in India, always the answer is \"Oh,it is nothing but just a political thing\". Nobody realizes that how much economical, emotional damage it causes to the whole nation. We are not learning from our past mistakes. Wait for the day when this political excuses will erase our nation from the map of the world.

I agree with you \"truthseeker\"...
I am an Indian --- synonymous with Coward.
(1)I am an Indian wife ... I can\'t say \"go to hell\" and walk out of domestic violent house...I bare everything till I get torched down
(2)I am an Indian consumer ... I can\'t return the low quality goods to the seller
(3)I am Indian woman ... when I get molested, I can\'t run to the Police, because I know they will advice me not to report

The greatest disadvantage the indians have is not hinduism or any religion. It is the leaders, who for their personal gains, are looting the country in the name of religion. They have brought the common man to this state that he is thinking along the lines of religion. If the common man had been given the basic necessities, I don\'t think the need for division would have arisen. After more than 50 years of independence, we are still lacking the basic infrastructure in our daily lives. And, if this is lacking, it is easy to incite people to divide people along religious lines. The leaders should be crucified for doing this to us.
