What is KEO?

KEO is one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken by Man. A message to the inheritors of Earth which will take off into space in the month of December, 2003 and return to Earth 50,000 years later. KEO is a space vehicle which will chiefly comprise of a huge glass sphere. This sphere will contain messages from millions, hopefully billions, of people from all over the planet. Messages that will span 50 millennia as KEO will return from it\'s space odyssey and alight on Planet Earth guided by an intricate flight plan and nature\'s laws of ballistics and dynamics.

Background

KEO is the brainchild of Jean-Marc Philippe. Conceptualised and executed with the help of the French Republic and several MNC\'s, KEO is ready to launch and all that remains to be completed is the collection of the content that will comprise this project.

The Cargo

KEO is basically devoted to carrying messages from citizens of Planet Earth in the 21st century to those in the 521st century. Apart from these personal messages, the satellite will carry several gifts to our descendants, including a complete Contemporary Library of Alexandria. All the content on board will be devoted to the sole purpose of preserving images of Earth today for something nearing an eternity.

Where you come in

You have just been given a chance of a lifetime. To send a message across an eternity and to immortalise yourself. You can say anything you want in any language you want. Try and visualise the sheer audacity of such a project and the wonderful part you play in it. Let loose and wax eloquent. The only restriction is that the content be limited to four A-4 size sheets. And let\'s try and keep it clean people. I don\'t think our swear words will be very relevant 50,000 years later.

To know more about KEO, visit http://www.keo.org. You can leave you message on the site or post it to

Programme KEO, BP 100,
75262 Paris,
Cedex 06 - France

You can also leave it at the French Embassy if you have one near you! Be sure to include the following information:

Sex
Date of Birth in the dd/mm/yyyy format
Nationality
Country of Residence
Country from which you are writing the message
Language in which the message is written
Mother Tongue
How you came to know about KEO

And do spread the word. Let everyone get a chance to have say a few words to his/her great grand... er 2000 times?... children!
