The "F" Word

by vivek of themavericks... remember!! » Thu Jul 25, 2002 11:25 pm

How many times have you uttered anything like \"Oh my god!\", or \"my gosh\" or evensomething like \" My oh My\".Its always \" Oh F$%^\" .Have you ever thought about it.I guess there are two words that have become an intergral part of anybody\'s vernacular. One of em` is \"cool\" as in ..\"oh the movie was COOL\",\"that VJ is COOL\" or \"I am COOL,how are you?\"...so \"Cool\" has been deemed suitable for everything thats good..and we have the exact opposite of the \"All good\" word \"COOL\".And thats the great F word. How relevant is this? And why do people use this(people includes me..and i use it quite a number of times).Lets talk about that.Try not to replace the F word in those contexts where the good word \"COOL\" fits in ..it might be offensive. For duffers only - The great F word thats been talked about is not \"FUN\"

One of the reasons i think no-one has replied to this topic in the past 2 days since it\'s been posted is there\'s nothing much to say about it!! I guess the words, expressions and body language that most of the youth today use today to convey just how lost they are. Brought up in a traditional Indian middle class (i said most, remember!) family, kids are instantly exposed to a different kind of lifestyle. TV, Music, friend\'s or relatives who return home from abroad affect the thinking and concious of younger minds. So gradually, kids start to imitate and behave in a certain way which lifts them higher than others around them. I\'m glad somebody\'s smart enought to bring this topic b\'cos it sometimes drives me bonkers. There have been so many instances of meeting old friends who\'ve gone of to different places and come back with a silly accent, tone or body language. And that\'s what i guess is happening all around us. We all seem to be a lost genereation who still haven\'t dedided on what is OUR way of living. It isn\'t completely Westernised nor is it completely Indianised. But that\'s a different issue altogether. ---(end of para)--- Now coming back to the topic, i\'ll agree that the F-word is heard almost everywhere. Yet agian, i emphasise that it\'s used mostly as a symbol to show how fast one is! Colloquial swears seem to be passe...or that\'s what i thought. As i move now to another stage in life, i find that the constant usage of the F-word does nothing to lift your esteem. It only proves how low your mentality is. \"FRICK\" or even \"FUTCH\" should be used to express frustration or anger. And that\'s \"COOL\"!!! Dig it?? Then just get a life!!!! ;-)

Absolutely great reply dude(heres the D-word!),well its a matter of being cool(heres the C-word) that drives many to use the F-word.The accent which u mentioned that your friends \"aquire\" when they return from ..say United States from Andraites(or USA) is actually not something they have naturally aquired, they have to sport some damn accent which remotely resembles the Amru accect other wisethey would not be regarded COOL!( here the word again!).I know so many honest guys who claim that, there is no reason to pick up accent, infact when Indian are there, they talk normally. Its only when they return, something goes wrong.Otherwise, having a fake american accent is a days job.Pssst..just have a Tete-a-tete with some of the Mod girls who frequent Coffee day,Barista. If you can manage to flirt with them(healthy way that is),you would notice..they oooz the fake accent like they just returned by YOU YES YEAH!.Its a whole syndrome..i say.One day we would have some Jhon Mathew as our President and we would also have Someone as President Reddy as the President of United states of Andraites...oopps America. No offense, its just that there are so many telugus there thats tempting me to change the name!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAH! Absolutely ridiculous! Just because some ole friend of yours came back from the United States sporting an American accent doesn\'t mean that all Telugus do that. As a matter of fact, I laugh at all the youth movies that I\'m watching because of \"your\" attempts to fashion yourself after the Western world. As a matter of fact, no body uses the word \"cool\" as many times as Shah Rukh or any of the Telugus use the word. I see fobs use the f-word more than any of my friends that I\'ve known for a long time here. Your kids aren\'t saying these things because it\'s \"COOL\". They are using them because they think it\'s \"cool\" to say \"cool\" all the time because Americans would think of them as \"cool\" when they hear them say \"cool\". Sorry, sir...when you are in Rome, do like the Romans do. Therefore, one adapts to a particular way of living here in U.S. Peace out.

I have seen not only the senseless teenagers , even the software enggs , business guys using this word very frequently, they think that using that word shows that they are pretty fluent in english and are well aware of the western english slang and hence are highly educated ,bla bla bla.

complete nonsence, tarun. the so called \"software engineers\" are a bunch of geeks who relent to profanity to identify themselves with the western world. However, obscenity and profanity is frowned upon by many organizations. And don\'t act all goody-goody all of you...the telugu swearing used by many in India is just as bad. So what is they wanna change gears and cuss in English?

Hmmm...No clear intelligent reply as yet,eh??? Fine. i\'ll give a shot at it. Question:: Why are words like F*** or B***h regarded as a statement of one\'s esteem? Answer:: (This one is in a more of pyschological sense than in the sociological one.) Whenever someone shouts out the F-word in a public place (eg. \"Go F*** her/him !!\"), we tend to gather or imagine a certain set of images in our minds. In this case - two ppl doing...erm,you know...what they\'re supposed to do.We all know that these are bad images and go against the Ettiquete rules. SInce it is taboo, and should not be used frequently, we associate a kind of bravery and machicmo to the person who has just used it. At the same time the \"utterer\" is fully aware of the fact that he has said something to gain a lot of attention. Henceforth ppl who see him again in a diff place and time, just recollect this small incident and crown him as \"A Cool Dude!\". So all you people around.....CHILL!!!!l,,,l

So far so good guys, lemme add some more of my observations. You see i would call it the Gap-filling strategy. Most of those who use the F-word would use it for two major reasons 1.As told by Mr Pavan i guess,is to be \"Cool\"(so the C-word!) and 2.They are actually bad in english, under the disguise of being fluent, these are two different things of spoken language.Fluent as in you perhaps don`t wanna stop and think as to what you would be speaking and to avoid that delay you exercise the so called Gap-Filling strategy, you use the F-word and the C word to fill tha gap, other ways to fill the \"gap\" would be making funny sounds like \" I think my fav colour is ... mmmmmmm...blue..cuz\' feel they are really cool(heres the damn word again).Application of gap filling strategies is to cover up the falacies one has in the vernacular.Swearing is another kind of gap filling method but they would make you look Hep\'..just like the way one of this boards members said.

Well here is the story of the \"F\" word. Did you ever wonder where the word F*** came from? Well it\'s
actually an acronym. It came from the olden days when the king
ruled over the entire land. You see back then the king controlled
everything...even how many babies were allowed to be born in his
kingdom. Before a couple could have a baby they would have to
get permission from the king.

If the king allowed them to have a baby he would give them a sign
that hung outside their door so that any guard passing by would
know that it was okay for them to be having s**. The sign said
\"Fornicating Under Consent of King\". Hence the word F***.
