More English ...

*I love English* Can you read these right the first time?

1) The bandage was *wound* around the *wound. **
2) The farm was used to *produce produce**.
3) The dump was so full that it had to *refuse* more *refuse**.
4) We must *polish* the *Polish* furniture.
5) He could *lead* if he would get the *lead *out.
6) The soldier decided to *desert* his dessert in the *desert. *
7) Since there is no time like the *present*, he thought it was time to * present* the *present. *
8 A *bass* was painted on the head of the *bass* drum
9) When shot at, the *dove dove* into the bushes.
10) I did not *object* to the *object. *

20) How can I *intimate* this to my most *intimate* friend?

Let's face it - English is a crazy language.

*You lovers of the English language might enjoy this ... There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is **"UP." *

* It's easy to understand** UP*, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake* UP*? At a meeting, why does a topic come* UP*? Why do we speak* UP* and why
are the officers*UP* for election and why is it* UP* to the secretary to write* UP* a report?
We call* UP* our friends. And we use it to brighten* UP* a room, polish* UP*the silver, we warm * UP* the leftovers and clean* UP* the kitchen. We lock* UP* the house and some guys fix* UP* the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. *People stir** UP* trouble, line* UP* for tickets, work* UP* an appetite, and think* UP* excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed* UP* is special.

And this* UP* is confusing: A drain must be opened*UP* because it is stopped* UP*. We open* UP* a store in the morning but we close it* UP* at night.
* We seem to be pretty mixed** UP* about* UP*! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of* UP*, look the word *UP* in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes* UP* almost 1/4th of the page and
can add* UP* to about thirty definitions. If you are*UP* to it, you might try building* UP* a list of the many ways* UP* is used. It will take* UP* a lot of your time, but if you don't give* UP*, you may wind*
UP* with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding* UP*.

When the sun comes out we say it is clearing* UP*.
* When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. *
* When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry** UP*.

Fess *UP*...you like this!

*One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it** UP*, for
now my time is* UP*, so ... Time to shut* UP ... *!
* Oh ... one more thing......*

*What is the first thing you do in the morning and the
last thing you do at night? U-P*

The Human Nature and Human Food *****

Dear Friends:

... for the last 10 years or so, I am dedicated to human values based on the classical Indian wisdom in a scientific and rigorous manner. In this pursuit I wrote a small booklet of 30 pages last year on a very important topic, namely vegetarianism. The booklet has some new original ideas and therefore, it has brought excellent feedback. A number of people/organizations have ordered it in thousands to distribute/sale among students, youngsters, executives, etc.

One person in Bangalore y’day ordered for 500 copies “to distribute for free among those who patronize KFC.”

I hope nobody will get me wrong – I don’t say that a vegetarian person is always better than a non-vegetarian person. What I want to say is, and I hope that most of you will agree with me, that when a non-vegetarian person turns to become a vegetarian then he/she definitely becomes a better person. This is an important component of the human values and worldwide it’s gaining acceptance that we human beings have many alternatives and it makes no sense to kill an innocent animal/bird for our food consumption.

The booklet will be useful to everybody. Those who are vegetarians will know why they should remain so. Those who are non-vegetarians will obtain some food for thought.

The booklet is priced at Rs. 12. Those ordering 50 or more copies will get it at Rs. 8 per copy. Last month I got it reprinted third time. Very likely, I will have to go for its 4th reprint next month. You may consider its sale (subsidized or otherwise) or distribution among your friends, relatives, colleagues, and even the people you don’t know such as the person in Bangalore wants to do. I will arrange for its pick up from a convenient location near Paradise in Sec’bad.

Below appears its brief description.

Warm regards,

Oslo's Sewage Heats***** Its Homes

OSLO (Reuters) - Fri Apr 7, 2006 - In an extreme energy project tapping heat from raw sewage, Oslo's citizens are helping to warm their homes and offices simply by flushing the toilet.

Large blue machines at the end of a 300-meter long tunnel in a hillside in central Oslo use fridge technology to suck heat from the sewer and transfer it to a network of hot water pipes feeding thousands of radiators and taps around the city.

"We believe this is the biggest heating system in the world using raw sewage," Lars-Anders Loervik, managing director of Oslo energy company Viken Fjernvarme which runs the plant, told Reuters. The plant opened this week.

The heat pump, a system of compressors and condensers, cost 90 million Norwegian crowns ($13.95 million) and has an effect of 18 megawatts (MW), enough to heat 9,000 flats or save burning 6,000 tonnes (5,900 tons) of oil a year.

And experts say sewers could be exploited elsewhere *****. ...

Air India Now Offers Business Caste***** Seating

April 12, 2006

MUMBAI—Air India, the subcontinent's largest airline, announced it will offer upgraded Business Caste seating on all flights starting in July. "More legroom, wider seats—and no need to associate with the manual laborers," a spokesman for the airline said Tuesday. "Our business travelers must have lived good past lives to deserve this." Air India still ranks at the bottom of the airline industry in customer satisfaction, with a high volume of complaints about cooking fires in the climate-uncontrolled cabins, wandering cows that flight attendants refuse to remove, and the "Untouchable" Coach Caste, which is towed behind Air India jetliners in a giant burlap sack.

Sardar Sarovar Project ***** - GoM's Confidential Report

This is the text, obtained exclusively by The Hindu, of "A Brief Note on the Assessment of Resettlement and Rehabilitation (R & R) Sites and Submergence of Villages of the Sardar Sarovar Project." The note marked confidential and dated April 9, 2006, was signed by Union Minister of Water Resources, Saifuddin Soz, Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Meira Kumar, and Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Prithviraj Chauhan.

The Group of Ministers (GoM) comprising Prof. Saifuddin Soz, Minister of Water Resources, Smt. Meira Kumar, Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment and Shri Prithviraj Chavan, MOS in the PMO, deputed by the Hon'ble Prime Minister to Madhya Pradesh, arrived Indore late in the evening on April 6, 2006. ...

... the GoM went to Dharampuri. It is the largest area selected by the Madhya Pradesh Government for settlement of oustees and 4,000 PAFs are slated to be settled there (No, they are shown to have been settled there already). Not a single plot of land has been occupied by any PAF.

Approximately 2,000 people, who had gathered there, explained through their representatives (about a dozen people explained their grievances) in detail and said that it was not possible for anybody to settle there as no infrastructure had been built. In official papers, it has been indicated that the PAFs have been settled. The GoM was amazed that no sanitation, no drinking water, no system of sewage, no roads, much less the facilities like hospital, water reservoir, school, post office etc., have been provided there. There is no hope that such infrastructure will be built there soon. The officials presented a status report in respect of R & R sites at Dharampuri indicating that facilities that need to be provided by way of infrastructure would be provided and certain facilities were in progress, whereas the GoM saw nothing happening around. ...
In any case, the PAFs, under no circumstances, can be settled there before first of July, 2006 when the monsoon sets in.

Dharampuri had been shown to the GoM as a success story by the Madhya Pradesh Government and it turned out to be the worst example of not doing anything by way of settlement when there was apparently no difficulty in respect of resources. The people there showed to the GoM two dry water pumps and a heap of stones that had been dumped there a day before the GoM's arrival indicating that roads would be built soon. ...

Press Sense - 30 / 4 / 06 : Da Vinci Judge's Secret Code Revealed

Da Vinci Judge's Secret Code Revealed

LONDON (Reuters) - Mystery solved. It was the admiral.

A secret code embedded in the text of a court ruling in the case of Dan Brown's bestseller "The Da Vinci Code" has been cracked, but far from revealing an ancient conspiracy it is simply an obscure reference to a Royal Navy admiral.

British High Court Justice Peter Smith, who handed down a ruling that Brown had not plagiarized his book, had embedded his own secret message in his judgment by italicizing letters scattered throughout the 71-page document.

In Brown's book, a secret code reveals an ancient conspiracy to hide facts about Jesus Christ.

The judge's own code briefly caused a wave of amused speculation when it was discovered by a lawyer this week, nearly a month after the ruling was handed down.

But the lawyer, Dan Tench, cracked it after a day of puzzling. The judge's code was based on the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical progression discussed in the book.

"After much trial and error, we found a formula which fitted," wrote Tench, who had nothing to do with the Brown case but discovered the italicized letters when studying the ruling.

The judge's secret message was: "Jackie Fisher, who are you? Dreadnought," Tench wrote in the Guardian newspaper.

Judge Smith is known as a navy buff, and Fisher was a Royal Navy admiral who developed the idea for a giant battleship called the HMS Dreadnought in the early 20th century.

Tench wrote that the judge had e-mailed him to confirm he had guessed the secret code right.

The judge later confirmed the existence of the code, and revealed that the Fibonacci sequence was indeed the secret to its solution.

"The message reveals a significant but now overlooked event that occurred virtually 100 years to the day of the start of the trial," he said in a statement.

He said that he is not normally much of a fan of puzzles, such as the Japanese number puzzles that have become an obsession of the British press.

"The preparation of the Code took about 40 minutes and its insertion another 40 minutes or so," he wrote. "I hate crosswords and do not do Sudoku as I do not have the patience."

Monkey Business & Shares

>>>>>

Once upon a time in a village a man appeared who announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for Rs. 10. The villagers seeing that there were many monkeys went out in the forest and started catching them. The man bought thousands at 10 and as supply started to diminish and villagers started to stop their effort he announced that now he would buy at 20 rupees.

This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching moneys again. Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer rate increased to 25 and the supply of monkeys became so that it was an effort to even see a monkey let alone catch it.

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at 50! However, since he had to go to the city on some business his assistant would now buy on behalf of the man.
In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers, "Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at 35 and when the man comes back you can sell it to him for 50."

The villagers queued up with all their saving to buy the monkeys. Phir na woh aadmi mila na us ka assistant........... Sirf bandar hee bandar.....

Red-faced Canadian Politician Returns Kids' Money*****

OTTAWA (Reuters), Fri Jun 2, 2006 - Some children in Canada are so well-off and so keen on current affairs that they donate thousands of dollars to politicians -- at least, that's what one contender for the leadership of the opposition Liberal Party seems to believe.

Former Immigration Minister Joe Volpe hit the spotlight this week after it emerged that a pair of 11-year-old twins and their 14-year-old brother had each donated C$5,400 ($4,900) to his leadership campaign.

The parents of the children -- who also donated C$5,400 to Volpe's campaign -- are related to the chairman of generic drug maker Apotex Inc. In total, five former and current executives of the firm and 15 of their family members handed over C$108,000.

Thursday, Volpe ordered that five donations from people under 18 be given back*****. ...

Baa, Baa Black Sheep blacklisted *****

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - An Indian state has removed nursery rhymes such as "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" and "Baa Baa Black Sheep" from its primary school syllabus because they are "too Western," newspapers said Wednesday.

The government in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, run by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, dropped the rhymes, immensely popular with millions of Indian children, from its Class I syllabus taught to five-year-olds.

"We want our children to have value education in local color," the Hindustan Times quoted Narottam Mishra, the state's school education minister***** as saying.

Children will now learn English-language rhymes written by Indian poets, papers said.

How Airbus cabling unwired a European giant *****

TOULOUSE, France (Reuters) - A trio of technicians crouched in the shell of an Airbus A380 look up and reply "Guten Tag!" to a greeting of "Bonjour!" and go back to their diagrams.

They are among dozens of extra specialists flown in from Hamburg to the Airbus assembly line in southwest France to help overcome problems in wiring Europe's superjumbo, the largest commercial aircraft ever built.

Working inside one of three disembowelled planes standing at work station 30, where aircraft are tested, they only have one task on their minds ...
The atmosphere inside the plant is otherwise eerily subdued for a firm in the throes of a crisis so serious that it caused a suspension of the French parliament and intensified a cross-border corporate power battle in France and Germany.

Designed to produce four of the giant planes a month, the 125,000-square-metre plant is full with eight aircraft, and the just-arrived parts of the next jet are stacked like broken toys.

"It is like a blocked pipe in your house. Putting more in doesn't open it up immediately," Andreas Fehring, vice president of A380 program management, says of the vast assembly line. ...

A Well-Argued Reply *****

Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy did a "Krishna Menon" in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday through his marathon reply to the weeklong debate on the BMIC project issue.

Mr. Kumaraswamy took nearly seven hours to hit out at the promoter of the project, NICE which has dragged the Government up to the Supreme Court and thrown various challenges at it. V.K. Krishna Menon, former Defence Minister, had spoken for nine hours in the United Nations General Assembly over the Kashmir issue in the early 1960s countering the arguments of the eminent Pakistani jurist M. Zafarullah Khan, who in pre-partition India was a judge of the Federal Court.

It was a fighting and well-argued reply from Mr. Kumaraswamy who is serving his first term in the Legislative Assembly. It was a challenging reply.

Press Sense - 10 / 7 / 06 : ‘Bharat’ Family of IIT Kanpur

‘Bharat’ Family of IIT Kanpur*****

Lucknow, July 9: There are no Guptas, Sharmas, Pandeys, Tiwaris, Tripathis, Shuklas, Singhs, Agarwals, Dixits and Hussains left on the campus. The surnames that denote caste have been dropped like leaves in the autumn, and all that remains is a feeling of oneness.

In what is possibly a unique form of protest against reservations, a group of nearly 200 students at IIT Kanpur have dropped their parental surnames, and adopted a common surname — “Bharat”. Chandra Shekhar Sharma is now Chandra Shekhar Bharat, Rahul Gupta is Rahul Bharat, Dujendra Pandey is Dujendra Bharat, Nutan Gautam is Nutan Bharat and even Akhlaq Hussain is Akhlaq Bharat.

“We are now members of one family that has the surname Bharat, and no one can differentiate (between) us on the basis of caste and creed,” says a member of the “Bharat” family, rather proudly. ...

I cannot salute the common man***** enough. The office-worker or the labourer who struggles to eke out a living and build a home in this tough city has learnt to adapt to transport strikes, political rallies, pollution and inflation. Despite a hard life, he steps in to help his fellow citizens when government agencies are slow to react. My response to the cynic who wonders if Mumbai has a heart is simple: think back to the brotherhood and resilience that the average Mumbaikar displayed during the desperation of the July 26 deluge. Your doubts will be erased.
