Also, CAD's infinite wisdom about voting in elections rings hollow. I myself, in my youthful naivete, peddled that line many a time. But really speaking, Indian political system, and this is an indictment of democracies world over as well, gives one very few real choices.
The problem is we are a top down democracy rather than a bottom up one. Tickets are given to candidates by political parties based on arbitrary criteria like one's lineage etc. What the candidates themselves stand for is seldom known. Yeah, there is a superflouus document put out called the "Manifesto" which outlines what a party, remember not an individual, will do if voted into power. There is no oversight or accountability after that. No one is required to adhere to their manifesto. As if this were not sufficient, we have that odious anti-defection law and the stupid Whip system, which effective emasculate our esteemed elected legislators.
What we have in India is the worst of all the systems in the world. We have a parliamentary democracy, but we vote for Sonia or Vajpayee, not for the individual parliamentarian in question.
What is the solution, one might ask? I am not one for saying "Kuch nahin ho sakta". Reading over the different posts, one thing comes across. That the politicians are this greedy evil lot who are out to pillage and rape the nation. Well, what exactly is preventing you Mr./Ms. Conscientious Well-Meaning Joe/Joanna from taking a more active role in the political process? There is lies the solution. Once we stop thinking that politics is the last resort of scoundrels, more and more right-thinking people enter politics. Maybe we can become like the USofA then.
I thought on exactly the same lines as you many a time. But think of it, Do you think a guy standing as an independent can compete in the election which is run my big money campaings? It is not an excuse I am giving but just one of the difficulties people face in putting that idea into practice.
Well there is only one way to develop india, And that is a "bottom up approach". Start with small communities, wards in cities, and villages. Its going to be a long process and not an instant relovution. first you make a huge base of people who believe in the same ideology , that will definetly take 10- 15 years. Then you can usher in the revolution. So the answer to india's problems lies in an approach that includes the majority of the people. Not the elite and the urban. If a process can be put into practise now ,, wec an hope to look at results in 2020, where we will have enough people wanting the same kind of things. Thats when things will indeed change.
