Ever increasing signs of a True Indian - the tirangi

by DQ » Mon Apr 24, 2006 8:27 am

I have experienced this lately. Meet with people from any part of the globe and the moment they find out you are Indian, even in a crowd people tend to prefer your company and find you reliable.

And the most frequent comments I have heard about peoples experiences about Indians. We should Pride this and carry this on. Represent india whereever we are

Intelligent

Witty

Not Arrogant

Helpful

Optimistic - Never negative or complaining

Humorous

What people most dislike or fear about indians

- Corrupt, it takes time before people trust us in business

- Timid, a factor that the education system has to over come the rote and the constant nagging and pressures within our system are making us timid.

- Lazy, though not a fact but a conclusion people make due to the fact that we tend to arrive late and not value others time. If there are 10 people working in an organisation each of them on a regular basis will arrive Late.

i agree with that except for 2 of the "positives" u listed (coz of personal experience).

many indians are "arrogant", at least come across as one, when they go on and on about the gr8ness and superiority of indian culture/ethos/music/society etc etc while talking to foreigners. believe me, we only come across as sanctimonious humbugs and they only listen to our talk for politeness sake. no one likes to be told they are in anyway inferior.

then the Humour part...most indians are good in humour as long as the joke is one someone else. most of us cannot take a joke on ourself.
wtf? i no longer care if my posts hurt yr feelings

We can never agree thats the base line.

Indians being snobs and snooty and arrogant. Well no its the negative the timidity part that makes them look arrogant.

And talk about bragging, bah. To the extent others brag and even lie we dont. we are known to talk about facts and shut up rather then intimidate.

Please read your own post again. You do the very thing you ask us not to do.

That is true. But, maybe you should understand Nobody is perfect and "most" of our desi attitudes will not change. I try hard not be any judgemental but i cannot hold down my ire.

I was just expressing it. My Obesrvations (even here in the US) :

Smelling like Onions , few of us donot use deos + hair oil stinks.

Living together in large groups (10 people in single bed apartments in NJ, for example.)

Scratching balls in Public / doing a veggie in public.

Spitting.

Talking in Native language at work.

// all of the above cases are atleast educated enough + highly capable and skilled individuals @ "speciality occupations" in the US.

the point is... when you are in Rome, do a romans do and not as romeos do.

I also agree, it takes time to adjust when you are a FOB but social etiquette can be learnt and practised everywhere ..and that includes India.

dig it ?

Respect difference of opinion and what not.

Now lets give some of your observations a different prespective.

(Remember this thread is the ever increasing signs....)

Smelling like Onions , few of us donot use deos + hair oil stinks.

- So your perception is smelly people.

- Though a million examples and comments can be shown where we (Indians) are seen as most appropriately dressed. But thats for another day.

- Talk about smelly onions - half the time I come across strong smells of beer and what not in corporate enviornments.

- Living together in large groups (10 people in single bed apartments in NJ, for example.)

Well not just the Indians, you find many people from the third world do that. But as the socio economic condition turns favourable you see the same peole in mansions too :-P

Scratching balls in Public / doing a veggie in public.

Oh is it, hope you have over come this.

Spitting.

- Is it. Again overcome it dude.

- Well I see others puke too, after a night of binge drinking. Oh thats classy right. After all its the gori chamdis puke.

Talking in Native language at work.

- So ?
