Mothers Day / Fathers Day v/s Valentines Day

by MLS » Tue May 03, 2005 1:33 pm

Just a thought that crossed my mind.

There are a few occasions we have borrowed from the West, the most popular being Valentines Day. My question is why hasnt Mothers Day or Fathers Day become so popular in our country?

If Valentines Day was a major marketing gimmick, why is that we as a culture that have very strong family ties at least till we are 20 (in many cases long after that too). Why didnt it succeed with Mothers Day and Fathers Day too ?

Not trying to stir a debate just thinking aloud here.

Just my views on the topic:

Though we have strong family ties in our country, we are usually not very overtly sentimental about our parents. My mother used to get very embarassed if I wished her on her birthday. Though she has now changed, there are still many like her. To think about gifting or wishing our parents on mothers/fathers day, is still a little uncomfortable thought for some...

Valentines' day, on the other hand, was targetted at the college, school, today's generation crowd who are open to these ideas....maybe that's the reason it caught on more...

It might be some other reason too...but this is what I can think of..

i think V-Day has become very popular in our country (compared to Mother's or Father's Day) coz the concept of 'dating' or 'falling in love' itself is a revolutionary concept in Indian society. some consider it a taboo. this is why ppl, esp youngsters, consider it an "achievment" if they find their love and the thought of celebrating their love on V-Day seems like a great idea.

if Mother's Day and Father's Day were to be as extensively marketed/popularized as V-Day was, maybe they'll catch on too...
wtf? i no longer care if my posts hurt yr feelings

I dont know about other people but I wish my parents on Fathers Day and Mother day and none of us were embarassed. The only regret was that I didnt get a gift for them, but its hard to get a gift particularly on those days because its kinda tough to get what they want.

And I agree w/ CAD. :D
