a 'set' is a continuous series of a repeated exercise. the number of repeats in a 'set' varies according to individual capacity. if u can do 5 perfect pushups continously, then one set wud have 5 repeats for u. in this way u can do multiple sets of 5 with a short rest interval between each 'set'. over a period of time, as u build stamina and strength you wud be able to increase the repeats gradually and finally u might endup doing, say, 20 repeats in a set!

that means u are either doing it wrong or over straining yrself. DO NOT continue a set of u feel muscular strain or pain. if u can do only 2 pushups continously, stop after two, take a breather, and do two more (another 'set').
for a beginner u can rest your knee on the floor as you do your pushups. After a few days, slowly try to take pressure of your knee and try to do do as much pushups as possible with knees in the air.
similarly, divide yr crunches into sets.
try pullups too..they help in straightening spine and also toning forearms,
wrists and biceps. they are more difficult than pushups but very effective.
Happy Exercising Jaanu!
