authentic non-Indian food in Hyd

by mark » Mon Mar 28, 2005 1:09 pm

In your opinion, are there any restaurants in Hyd that serve authentic non-Indian food? If not, is there a market for one? When I say authentic, i mean once you walk in the door, the place could be in the country the cuisene is from and a native of that country could not tell the difference.

If you think there are some please indicate if you have been to that country, and what dishes in particular are spot on.

well....most of the non-indian cuisine u wud get in most parts of india wud be tweaked to suit indian tastes....

the most popular non-indian food in hydbad is chinese and since last few yrs thai and malay food are catching the fancy of ppl here.

u wud find close-to-authentic non-indian food (european, oriental etx) in the *-hotels. in stand-alone restaurants i recommend Fusion-9 in banjara hills for european cuisine. for chinese i recommend Golden Dragon, Mainland China, Ohri's Ming Court, Ohri Far East, Hai King (akhil, u n i've been there, mark!), Chung Hua...any others i cant remember now...

for malaysian, thai, vietnamese, jap cuisine Ohris Far East, Wang's Kitchen, Cinnabar Red

there is a small place in jubilee hills, On The Way (near Trinetra supermarket) that is known for some good continental (european) stuff...

i have sampled most of the above cuisines in their original avtars (i think they are original) in australia and i am sure they wont sell well in india apart from certain urban pockets.
wtf? i no longer care if my posts hurt yr feelings

I agree that most places in Hyderabad would definitely tweak all non-Indian food to Indian tastes. It's quite depressing, really.

The restaurant called "Gallopin' Gooseberry" tried to serve non-tweaked recipes when they launched, but it seems to have failed, since they have now branched out into Andhra cuisine and things like kebabs.

But I suppose they can only serve what sells. :(

my theory is that all the spicy food numbs the taste buds, and subtle food isn't appreciated. most of my Indian collegues were hilariously funny whenever eating out. The strategy was

1. Order anything on the menu

2. Cover it in a thick layer of ketchup

3. Cover the ketchup in a thick layer of pepper

4. Consume (while giving out about how bland it is)

i love spicy food, but i love herbie Italian food and juicy british food, and strange and wonderful french food, and tangy spanish food.. there's so many great European foods out there it's a shame to throw them all under the catagory of continental. Any kitchen which is able to cook continental and chinese and indian will probably f**# them all up.

Are you talking about "Touche"? or "Zamu's place"? They both have YUMMY sizzlers!!!

I think Hyderabad is a little more "cuisine-impaired" compared to metros or cities like Pune.

In chennai there's (or was in 2002) this great Korean/Japanese place, run by a Korean family, the food was stunning. i hope its still there, it was really off the beaten track, can't remember how we found it. Really nice atmosphere, we were the only ones in there and we were served by the owner, who was lovely.

Touche the sizzler it is! :D

The variety of cuisine is good in pune. but its on the costlier side too..as compared to hyd.

IMO the nearest western food is served at 10DS,On the way and Fusion 9.Whenever I miss Spagetti or any other western dish,I go to those places. Then there are the five star hotels.During their buffets they have a couple of good dishes. You ucan always order of the menu at the hotels.I never did that, always went for the buffet.

Mainland China is also tweaked to fir Inidan Standards, its not exactly chinese food. :D
