Nagarjunasagar

True to say, my trip to Nagarjunasagar was an uncompleted task. Still it had enough stuff.

On one fine Sunday morning after finishing my Saturday night duty, I got some sudden impulsion to go to Nagarjunasagar. At 0930 hrs, I started towards the Imliban bus stand (MGBT) beyond Abzalgung .I reached there at around 1030 hrs. I accidentally took one of the worst Tiffin in my life at the APSRTC Canteen at the bus stand. Exactly At 1100 hrs, the HI-TECH bus started towards Nagarjunasagar. One Gentleman who was sitting by my side told some encouraging words that I would definitely catch the tourist launch boat at Sagar. (Nagarjuna sagar). However, the driver a***ole was moving the bus in snails speed. He stopped the bus in a small town midway. Both the driver and the conductor took free lunch in the restaurant. In the bus, I could see three to four young couples in teens. I could see some foreigners too. Finally, I reached the Nagarjunasagar at 1415 hrs.

As such, Nagarjaunasagar is a vast area. It should be described as a single village. The dam area extends to a distance of about 10 Kms. So many restaurants are there around the road. There are so many bus stops in that region/circle. State government accommodation/government quarters are scattered over here and there. You can view the wonderful scenery of river Krishna on one side and the dam areas on the other side. Boathouse is the last Bus stop over there. From there the bus route goes to the place Macherla.

I immediately rushed to the boathouse (launch pad) at about 1420 hrs. Oh god. By the time I reached there, the boat had already left just 20 minutes earlier at 1400 hrs. Therefore, I missed the opportunity to see the historic Island museum, the Nagarjunakonda. Correctly, to say my heart was struggling with pain. It was a Great disappointment for a tourist.

The boat timings are as follows.

First boat starts at 0900 hrs.
Second boat starts at 1330 hrs.
You can report one hour before and do current reservation.

Unfortunately, no advance reservation facility is available.

So please be cautious about the timings. They have no mercy. They do not engage boats even for groups beyond 1330 hrs.

I tried to recover soon from my disappointment. The reception staff told me that I could visit the historic Anupu village nearby. I did not want to waste still more time.

I hired an auto. The auto driver vacated the passengers who were already sitting inside the auto. He agreed to show all the archaeological remains in that village. The auto charges were fixed at Rs130/-. The road from Launch pad to Anupu was good.

In Anupu an entire area is under the control of Archaeological Survey of India. First, we went to the Krishna river reservoir point. Then, we went to the ranganath temple. It is just like any other village temple. I did not see any thing special in that temple. By the time, I went there; a village social gathering was taking Telugu community lunch.

Next, I went to the Old Monk Nagarjuna’s monastery remains. ASI people have neatly laid out everything there. In those olden days, the monastery was functioning as University also.

Next is the main attraction. The huge old auditorium. It was perhaps used for performances like dance, events etc. unfortunately I could not find any guide over there. If you climb over that, you can see the wonderful Krishna reservoir.

Then I went to the place where the remains of an old temple are there. It had not much attraction.

Finally, I returned to the launch pad by that auto. I reached there at about 1530 hrs.

Exactly In front of the boat launch pad there is a hotel by name NAGARJUNA RESORT.

It is conveniently located. I took lunch there. It was ok type. It is more than enough for a place like Nagarjunasagar village. However, I did not go inside and stayed there. Therefore, I cannot comment about the services. I could see young couples in teens occupying the rooms. Probably they should have come Hyderabad city only.

Returning bus service to Hyderabad -a Terror .

Just in front of the launch pad, there is a bus stop. I could find few teashops and a bar also. I took one coffee in that place at about 1600 hrs. I asked the woman there regarding the next bus to Hyderabad. She simply told me that it is at 1830 hrs. I got terrified. To wait in that place for two and half hours is a pain. Meantime I could see young couples in groups’ hugging each other in the roadsides. They must be staying in the lodges around there.

To my pleasant shock, I got a special trip bus at around 1700 hrs on that day. It reached Hyderabad at 2015 hrs. Thus, my Nagarjunasagar trip concluded with some memories.

AP Tourisms Nagarjuna trip

As a pleasant surprise, AP Tourism has activated the Nagarjunasagar trip now a day. They operate on Saturdays and Sundays. Please contact the AP tourism reservation offices.

I AM SAD THAT I HAVE FINISHED ALL MY TOUR PROGRAMMES.

IT WILL TAKE ANOTHER 6 MONTHS TO START THE NEXT TOUR.

Hi Sujatha.. Interesting.I have now added a trip to Nagarjunasagar dam in my next visit to Hyderabad.I also read your Vizag post ..Good that you only highlighted the area around the beach and not the dirty city surrowndings.I cannot think of a more human waste littered streets than Vizag, possibly Surat will compete with Coastal Andra towns in this respect. Chandra Babu Naidu tried to clean up the towns and almost succeeded in Hyderabad but now that the old Cong(i) regime has set in, the road to rot and stink will not be far off.

Nagarjuna Sagar I completed my mission.

Recently we went to the spot Nagarjunakonda which I missed earlier.

This time we selected AP Tourism.

AP Tourism bus starts from Hyderabad central office at 0700 hrs. The bus reached Yatrinivas, Secunderabad at 0715 hrs. After waiting for a few minutes, it started at about 0745 hrs.

We took Breakfast at small village at about 0900 hrs. At 0930hrs, the bus started towards Nagarjunasagar.

It reached Nagarjuna Sagar at about 1115 hrs. Initially it goes to the government tourist hotel Vijay Vihar. The atmosphere at Vijay Vihar was good. However, we were forced to take too early lunch at 1145 hrs. All had better avoid breakfast at intermediate village.

In that hotel, All of a sudden, one Guide appeared in front of us. He took the money 50+7+15 for Launch boat, museum and ‘etipottala water falls’.

Meanwhile We took spicy vegetarian Andhra Lunch Rs 44/- including tax.

Being Sunday our special Boat started about 1245 hrs. On other normal days, usually the boat starts at 1330 hrs.

Getting Upper berth in the boat is difficult. There was so much competition to get the upper berth.

Boat journey takes 45- 60 minutes.

As such the Nagarjunakonda lies in a long island.

Nagarjunakonda museum has old Buddhist archeological exhibits.

There were old British time photos taken on original excavation site.

We walked further inside the island to see the relocated monuments.

Please remember, that in summer you may need to take at least 3 liters of water, un umbrella, and minimum 1 small absorbable towel.

There is a small canteen inside the island, which provides only tea, coffee, and cold beverages.

There is ‘pay and use’ toilet maintained by Archeological survey of India.

Please remember the last boat starts correctly at 1600hrs from the island.

If you miss that, you have to play with the King cobras at the island throughout whole night. So please be cautious.

Then the tourist bus went to the Etipottala water falls at 17 kms distance from the Nagarjunasagar launch pad. It has the wonderful Light show, which started s at 1845 hours.

Bus reached the city at 1015 hrs after tedious journey.

Bi friends try Nagarjunakonda at least once.
