this is the reason there needs to be more education about drugs in schools, lots of legal substances will damage your body far more than illegal ones.
And i'm not talking education like we get in schools in US/UK (weed will make you impotent/psychotic/gay, LSD stays lodged in your spinal cord for years and causes horrible flashbacks, etc)
If the government makes some substances illegal, the message they are sending out is, "You're not fit to make informed decisions about what substances you put in your body, let us do that for you, by throwing you in jail if you smoke/sniff/inject/eat something which we say you can't. We're only saving you from yourself!". However as proved by the Iodex stories above, they cant ban everything that could harm you.
I've actually heard some guys say of Salvia (a legal(in the UK) weed like plant that causes vivid hallucinations when smoked) "If this stuff was dangerous the Gov would've banned it." There are lots of dangers with Salvia, such as passing out with a lit bong in your hand and burning the house down, for example.
Considering I gave misuse_dowery_laws so much hassle about outlining a 10 step programme, heres mine.
1. Educate yourselves. You may have no intention of using drugs, but at least you will detect it early if a loved one is in need of help. Don't swallow every line you've heard about the harmful or benificial effects of any drug.
A report i saw earlier this week mentioned that painkillers like paracetamol and asprin may be far more harmful than previously believed, if you used these drugs intellegently in the past then you're singing, however if you took the attitude that cos they were available to buy over the counter you can use them every day of your life then you're in trouble.
2. Educate your children. If you feed them the usual crap about obeying the law at all times, that will be easily overridden by the first manipulative person they meet in their lives. Instead encourage them to make their own decisions, based on extensive research. This leaves them much less open to peer pressure, as oyu are encouraging them to use their own mind, rather than just trust their parents over some of theit teenage friends (adolesence is not a good time to try to win a trust test against your son/daughter's friends)
3. Ask questions. The more you think of the worldwide war on drugs, the less sense it makes. Why is it alright for Native Americans to eat mescaline, but every other race in the country will get slapped in jail for 10 years if they try it? Why can Sadhus smoke, and not the rest of us? Religion? Culture? I can start my own religion tomorrow (hey, they've got to start somewhere) , would it be legal for me to eat mescul if i said it was for spiritual reasons connected to my deep belief in nothing at all? Why are alcohol and Tobacco legal drugs (more harmful than most illegal drugs, and tobacco is more addictive that heroin!) but weed (something with just as long a history as tobacco) is illegal?
Ok thats all the points i can think of, and some of them are fairly ropey.
I feel about this issue like i imagine misuse_dowery_laws feels about his. I feel that nobody gives a shit except me (i'm not an illegal drug user, by the way, i've tried MJ a few times, but that certainly doesn't class me as a drug abuser). Just fed up of the bullshit. The history of drug prohibition is a short and hilarious one, or at least it would be hilarious if it didn't ruin so many peoples lives. For a quick exerpt of this history, google for "H. J. Anslinger". This guy was truly a sick puppy.
I know this doesn't seem like an important issue when compared with recent activities in the world (war on terror, Tsunami, Dave Beckhams latest haircut) but the governments of the world spend thousands of crore $ every year to try to protect us from ourselves, they stick people in jail cos they like to smoke a different weed from the type they say is OK for us to smoke. And all the while those Billions could be going to educate, to help addicts (cos throwing them in jails sure as shit doesn't help them)
Well if you'll excuse me, i'm having a hard time typing and spreading my iodex sandwich at the same time.
i'll leave with two great quotes, if you're still with me at this stage then you may have enough motivation to look up who said 'em.
"The great masses of the people . . .
will more easily fall victims
to a big lie than
to a small one."
"Prohibition goes beyond
the bounds of reason
in that it attempts to control
a man's appetite by legislation,
and makes a crime out of things
that are not crimes."
