Same age? Spells trouble!

by Itsme » Sat Apr 12, 2003 9:08 pm

All my guy friends were up in arms against me when I said this: \"I find guys of the same age a tad immature...\" But (thankfully) lots of my girl friends agreed... It\'s worked out to be true most of the times, barring a few exceptions... I find it easier to relate to a guy who\'s a couple of years older... Any opinions?

PS: Anu, have to admit, your board made me come up with this one.

I don\'t think age has anything much to do with it. How mature a person is is a function of how much he reads and how much he interacts with others - the former offers several indirect experiences and insights, and the latter more direct experiences and insights. And people become more mature with more experiences and insights, which enhance the capability for empathy. Then, judging guys\' maturity is done best when you see them interact with other guys when no women are around. When there are girls around, most guys get into the \'impressing\' mode, and are not themselves. They try to act \'cool\'/macho/funny, and end up saying and doing things they\'d cringe at if a video of all that was replayed to them 10 years (or maybe even 10 hours!) later.

What kind of maturity are you talking about? The first rule of the game is to be mature enough to know whose opinion counts and whose does not... If you say that most of your girl friends agree to this, then please give some thought to whether that makes a good sample space. Reason is superior to humans than facts... Hence if you will be kind enough to support your statement with some concrete reasons, it would be worth discussing...

The mental maturity level is higher in female than in the male by at least 3-5 years. For example, a 23 year old girl\'s
maturity level is equivalent to that of a 26-28 years old boy. Because of this reason, back home it became the part of tradition in our culture. It may not apply in each and every case. But majority - at least 75% - is true.

Well Anu, you committed the same mistake as itsme did... Mental maturity of what?? Mental emotional maturity? Or Mental response to events? Or maturity of being impulsive??? Well, I\'d say on each of them what I want to...

(1) Emotionally: Well, apparently we see that girls are emotionally more dependent but I think in reality they are more mature... They can take losses with less pain. Direct evidence is the number of heart attack cases. Women have very low share in this...
(2) Response to events/long term planning: I think that guys are more mature here. They can rise above their likings and do things which can be of meaning only in the future... Not all girls can rise above this...
(3) Impulsive: Guys are more impulsive (relax... that means they are less mature). Yes, it is so... They are the more aggressive of the sexes thanks to their hormonal makeup...

Having said all this, I\'d like to request all you ppl that we should never bring in the question of comparison of male and female. Can we say that our right hand is better than the left? No, we can\'t, becos there are people who use the left hand with more ease than the right... got me? It\'s only the role assigned to each of us that is important, not us... Women can do all the things men can. Liberalisation has proved this. But remember, it has also proved that the points which women used to claim to be superior to men - such as morals - have proved to be frailities for women also... Haven\'t drinking, smoking and aggresiveness creeped in females?? Are they opting for alternative lifestyles? They are not pious any more. They are equally mortal. And that\'s what I\'m preaching - equality. So please don\'t compare...

Hey Rakshit, relax! All I meant to say was that older guys can probably empathise with you more... Actually, anyone older will probably understand you better simply because they\'ve seen the world more than you have. I brought up the guy issue bcoz I had just read the posts on Anu\'s board about the maturity levels of the genders. I\'m not here to further the cause of the female gender... Puhleeeease...
The \'same age\' thing has been my experience... maybe there are ppl of the same age who will be perfectly in sync with me mentally... trouble is I\'ve hardly met any... I\'d just like to repeat that the objective of the discussion was not to debate which the superior sex is.
