Music Review : Swadesh - We, The people

Swadesh comes from almost the same team that made the Academy Award nominated Lagaan. The music by ARRahman sounds similar to that of Lagaan too. The first song is on TV all the time. ‘Yeh tara wo tara’, the first song is brilliant. The song is medium paced with brilliant lyrics by Javed Akthar. It has this typical village road show feel with the wise guy explaining simple facts of life in a simple manner to the village audience. Very well sung and the interludes by the two kids comes right on time when we start to feel the monotony.



Second number is a normal Hindi film duet type, nothing to buy in there. The third song – Yun Hi Chala chal.. is peppy and makes you want to sing along, if not swing. This is a perfect number for that long drive you want to go alone. Song # 4 has the feel of a folk song remixed just enough to suit rahman’s style. Its ok, not that great.



Song# 5 is the absolute paisa vasool number! Sung by ARRahman himself , the song “ Yeh jo desh hai tera..” is superb. A slow number so well rendered that it gets in your system almost instantly. Song #6 has elements of a street play on Ramayana. Song #7 ‘Dekho na..’ is typical Rahman, its one of those ordinary sounding songs that grows in you once you pay attention to the instrumentation. That’s where this song differs. Its lyrically ordinary, but the variations in the harmony wakes you.



Song # 8 and #9 are instrumental versions. One of them is of ‘Yeh Jo desh..’ in Shenai. Absolutely brilliant.

Dunno about the music. ARRs music always takes time to grow on the listener.I love the choreography of Ek Taara!

The official website of NASA has an article that talks of the scene of the movie Swades canned in the Kennedy Space Center. The movie staring Shah Rukh khan is about the typical Indian who leaves for USA in search of greener pastures but later realizes that he needs to be back for his mother nation – India.







Shah Rukh plays an NASA scientist involved in the Global Precipitation Measurement ( GPM) project. A satellite scheduled to be launched in 2007 that would be used to measure global rainfall. This is an actual NASA project that is currently underway.







According to the article published in the NASA website “In the movie, spacecraft is lifted into orbit aboard a Space Shuttle; NASA's real orbiter fleet is scheduled to return to flight in March 2005, when Discovery carries Commander Eileen Collins and her crew on STS-114.”







The music of Swades is by Maestro A R Rahman, who had earlier worked by the same director for the academy award nominated movie Lagaan.







Swades is scheduled for a global release in December, 2004

Somehow, Rehman's music has become so repetative that I've stopped enjoying it. Whenever he comes out with a new release, I'll probably listen to the songs a couple of times and then get bored of them.



No doubt he's talented but he doesn't carry a variety that is the hallmark of all greats. No doubts he's carved out a name for himself in the annals of Indian music but he's not a patch on the likes of Pancham, Laxmikant Pyarelal and even Rajesh Roshan, not to speak of greats from the era before that.



I'm not very enthusiastic about Swades either. Movie dekhenge tab gaane bhi sun lenge.

Try and make an honest effort to create a list of the best and popular songs of yester year's composers. The list wont exceed 100 items out of some 10,000 songs composed everyone included. The math applies even for today's composers.

If you noticed, I mentioned the generation prior to Pancham, LP too, though without taking names. We still talk about SD Burman, OP Nayyar, Roshan, Shankar Jaikishen, Madan Mohan, Salilda etc. And I'm sure the coming generation will do so too. And I'm not just talking about talking. I'm also talking about sales. HMV's Golden Collection is still one of their highest selling collections. And they have even 50 year old songs in it. That's what I call timeless.

Do you see even a 5 year old music casette or CD in stores nowadays? Even Rehman's

You can check out my collection. Every single song is worth listening to n times over and can be called a masterpiece. And yeah...there are more than 100 songs per composer...or did you mean 100 songs in all? If so, your math is grossly off the mark.

I personally thought Swadesh wasnt that good compared to other ARR works.I mean the songs were nice but I didnt fall in love with them the first time I heard it.It took time to like the songs.
