Telangana Congress leaders today observed a hunger strike at Gandhi Bhavan for the protection of the rights of the SC and ST members on Monday.

Telangana Congress party affairs in-charge R C Khuntia, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy, leaders Mohammed Ali Shabbir, D Sridhar Babu, Anjan Kumar Yadav, V Hanumantha Rao, MLC Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy and others participated in the fast.

Andhra Pradesh PCC president N Raghuveera Reddy extended solidarity with the fasting leaders.

Speaking on the occasion, Raghuveera Reddy said that the Congress was acting like a protection shield for the dalits, women and minorities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was reminding people of the British rule now, and the Congress was the party that stood for equal rights to all sections of the people, he said.

"The BJP hates the dalits and minorities, but the Congress loves them," he alleged.

He also stressed the need to launch a movement for the sake of special status to Andhra Pradesh.

TPCC SC Cell chief Arepally Mohan said that the central government didn't make good arguments in the Supreme Court in the case involving the SC, ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. The present state and central governments were taking steps to water down the Act, he said, and demanded the restoration of the act to what it was before the SC judgement on it. He also alleged that the Centre was not in a position to see the problems of the dalits till the latter gave a call for a Bharat Bandh.

Expelled MLA S A Sampath Kumar, a dalit, also found fault with the Supreme Court's verdict on the SC, ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, and said that the hunger strike's aim was to tell dalits and minorities that the Congress was with them. Also targeting the Telangana government, Kumar said that there were news of attacks on dalits and tribals every day in the state, and the Nerella incident was a great example of the TRS government's attitude towards the SCs and STs.

Senior leader D K Aruna and former union minister S Jaipal Reddy also voiced similar opinions.
