ST reservations in Telangana will go up to 10% from the existing 6%, and Muslims under the BC-E category will get a 12% quota instead of the present 4%.
Hyderabad | 15th April 2017
The Telangana Cabinet today met for two hours at Pragathi Bhavan and reportedly gave its nod for increasing reservations for Scheduled Tribes and Muslims, with which the reservations will go up to 62% from 50%.
Chairing the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao reiterated his commitment to empower these communities "lagging behind in several spheres for several decades" by hiking the reservations relevantly.
According to informed sources, ST reservations will be hiked to 10% from the existing 6%, and Muslims under the BC-E category will get a 12% quota instead of the present 4%.
The hikes in reservations are based on the population census of 2011. The Muslim population is pegged at 12.4%, and that of STs is 8.3%.
However, the Assembly has to pass a bill and send it to the Centre for its approval and for the assent of President Pranab Mukherjee. The bill is likely to be passed in a special session of the Assembly scheduled to be held on April 16 at 10 am.
If the reservation bill is passed by both the Assembly and the Council, and gets the Centr's nod, the reservations will, as mentioned above, increase from 50% to 62%, and the pattern will be as below:
BC reservations will remain at 25%
BC-E (Muslim Minorities) reservations will be 12%, up from 4%
SC reservations will remain at 15%
ST reservations will rise to 10% from 6%
Besides the reservations, the Cabinet, which discussed about 30 agenda items, also gave its nod to the draft of a new State Heritage Buildings Act, to replace the present Heritage Act which is limited to only Hyderabad and its buildings.
Other issues the Cabinet prominently discussed include the GST Bill which needs to get the Assembly nod, hiking DA for the state government employees and pensioners, promotions for over 100 senior police officers, and a hike in the ex-gratia payable to fishermen dead in accidents from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 4 lakhs.
