In yet another welfare scheme for the farmers in Telangana who have already been given Rs 4,000 per acre per crop season gratis, the state government today signed an agreement with LIC to provide Rs 5 lakhs to the kin of the farmers who die in any manner (natural, accidental, suicide or other).
The scheme, which the government claims is the first of its kind in the country, will be implemented from August 15 across the state.
Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao announced that the Rs 5 lakhs insurance amount will be given to the kin within 10 days of the death of any farmer aged between 18 and 60 years.
The farmers need to fill the LIC forms with the names of the nominees and submit them to the relevant officials for the purpose.
The CM said that he was quite satisfied with the terms of the MoU with LIC. He appealed to the farmers to take the insurance policies, and that he would also accept it despite not accepting the RBS cheques.
Speaking about Rythu Bandhu too on the occasion, he said that a national newspaper had stated that the scheme was the best in the country, and that about 89% of the farmers had received cheques under it. His government would do even more for the farmers, he said.
"Our intention is to ensure that the farmers who feed to the country should remain happy by also getting MSPs for their produce, and marketing facilities. Farmers' growth is national growth, and the state government is determined to help them get all possible support," he claimed.
He however said that the government would be unable to extend the Rythu Bandhu scheme to tenant farmers.
