Senior TRS leader and former minister T Padma Rao Goud was unanimously elected as Deputy Speaker of the Telangana State Legislative Assembly on Monday.
His election was announced by the Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy as soon as the House met for the day.
Later, Goud was conducted to the Deputy Speaker's chair by the Leader Of The House and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, Leader Of Opposition Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, and leaders of the BJP and the MIM. They all also congratulated Goud on the occasion.
Addressing the House later, the Chief Minister recalled his association with Goud, who he said had been with the TRS since its inception. "Our journey for the achievement of statehood for Telangana had begun like a journey in a desert in 2001, and there have been many memorable moments. Also, the relationship that Goud has maintained with his constituents is an example for many leaders. He has proven that any politician who builds a mass connect with his people can taste wonderful successes in public life," KCR said.
Leader Of Opposition Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka pointed out that Goud had begun his political career as a Youth Congress leader. He also said that Goud had served the people of Hyderabad in an exemplary fashion as a Corporator, and that that had led to his steady rise.
In the 2009 Assembly elections, Goud contested from the Sanathnagar Assembly constituency on a TRS ticket and lost to Congress leader Marri Shashidhar Reddy. He later contested from the Secunderaad Assembly segment again on a TRS ticket in 2014, and won by a comfortable majority this time. He also became Minister for Excise and Sports in KCR's cabinet immediately. In the 2018 Assembly elections he retained the seat, and has become the Deputy Speaker now.
