Owaisi Opposes "Triple Talaq Bill" In Parliament

MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi opposed the bill banning triple talaq presented in Parliament today, saying it violated the primary rights of the Muslim community.
Hyderabad | 28th December 2017
The NDA government introduced a bill banning triple talaq via the Muslim Women's Marriage Rights Protection Bill in Parliament on Thursday.

Participating in the discussion, MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi opposed the bill stating that it violated the primary rights of the Muslim community.

He received support on the matter from BJD MP Bhartruhari Mahtab who claimed that the bill was full of mistakes and alleged that the bill had many deviations from the original draft.

In an effort to clear the doubts raised by Owaisi and Mahtab, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad stated that the bill was only meant to protect the rights of Muslim women, and was not an attack against any religion or tradition.

The subject of the bill deals with the practice of divorce under Muslim personal law, and states that triple talaq will be invalid if said directly, in writing, or in electronic form.

Under the contents of the new bill, husbands who claim divorce on the basis of having uttered the word "talaq" thrice will be liable to be punished by law. There is also a provision for women to approach the courts for being granted monthly compensation.

The minister added that women would also be able to approach the courts to have their minor children protected.
