To highlight the issue of the fall in the prices of agricultural produce, YSR Congress Party chief and Leader Of Opposition in Andhra Pradesh Y S Jaganmohan Reddy has decided to stage a protest (deeksha) at Guntur on April 26 and 27.
"I have decided to take up cudgels on behalf of the farmers since it has come to light that the buyers at the marketyards have formed a cartel and quoted very low prices, and the AP government, which should be coming to the rescue of the hapless farmers, is remaining a silent spectator," Jagan said.
"Price fall due to cartelisation has been clear in the Duggirala turmeric market and the Guntur chilli yard. The low prices have forced several chilli farmers to end their lives," he added.
Jagan had recently visited the Guntur chilli yard to witness for himself the problems apparently being faced by the farmers, and that appears to have triggered his decision to stage a deeksha. As of now, the venue in Guntur is yet to be decided, and will be announced after obtaining permission from the authorities concerned.
