The Department of Legal Metrology, Telangana, has intensified the crackdown on GST fraud upon orders from the Commissioner For Civil Supplies C V Anand following several complaints from people.

Over the last six days, the department has conducted over 5,000 raids and conducted detailed checks in malls, multiplexes, star hotels, restaurants, bars, sweet houses and other business points.

Charging GST on MRP and non-GST items were among the offences reported in these raids.

Commissioner C V Anand said that 1,062 cases had been booked till now, and Rs 10.62 lakhs collected in penalties. Cases had been booked against Hyderabad Central Mall, PVR Cinemas, KFC, McDonalds, Prasadz Mall, Subway Food Court, Srujana Mall in Kukatpally, Blue Fox restaurant, Shanbagh Hotel, Golkonda Hotel and Park Hotel among others, he said.

The Commissioner said these business ventures were cheating people by charging GST on MRP.

"We will intensify the crackdown. If anybody is caught for the first time charging above the MRP, a penalty between Rs 2,000 and Rs 25,000 will be slapped. If they are caught for the second time, the penalty will be doubled," he said.
