AP Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana's son Nishith Narayana, 22, and his friend Raja Ravi Varma, 23, were killed after their Mercedes Benz rammed a Metro pillar on Road No. 36 in Jubilee Hills in the early hours on Wednesday.

According to preliminary reports, Nishith Narayana and Ravi Varma, son of businessman M M Krishna, were returning home after attending a party, at around 2:45 am in a Mercedes Benz (TS07 FK7117). The car rammed a Metro pillar at a high speed. Due to heavy rains in the city in the hours before that, the area was filled with water and darkness, and there were no street lights. Both of them were rushed to the nearby Apollo Hospital where the doctors declared them dead.

Apollo Hospital forensic expert Dr Surender Reddy, who examined the bodies of Nishith Narayana and Raja Ravi Varma, released a medical report and confirmed that the cause of the accident was the high speed at which the car was being driven. Though some eye-witnesses said that the youths were drunk, the Apollo doctors said they found no alcohol in their bodies. Nishith sustained grievous injuries on his chest and died instantly. His liver and lungs were totally damaged as he did not wear his seat belt. Dr Reddy opined the two would have died within 10 minutes of the accident. The post-mortem was conducted by doctors of Osmania General Hospital, at Apollo Hospital.

Nishith, born on July 4, 1994, was one of the directors of the Narayana group of institutions. He is survived by his parents and two sisters. The body is being shifted to Nellore and the funeral will be performed on Thursday.

Minister Narayana, who is on tour in London, is reported to have returned after being informed of the tragedy. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, ministers, MLAs and other TDP leaders expressed grief over the death of Nishith Narayana. Most of them left for Hyderabad to console the family.

From Telangana, Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao rushed to Apollo Hospital and consoled the family members. Several other leaders including IT Minister K T Rama Rao, Jana Sena president and actor Pawan Kalyan, YSR Congress Party chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and others condoled the death.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad West Zone Deputy Commissioner Venkateshwara Rao said that the youths had met their end only due to rash and reckless driving near Peddamma Temple in Jubilee Hills. He said the impact was so severe that the car after hitting the Metro pillar swerved back a few yards. The night patrolling policemen who rushed to the spot in the heavy rain extricated the bodies with the help of GHMC personnel after breaking open the car doors, the DCP said.

It is strongly believed that the heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashing the city might have been responsible for the ghastly accident. Heavy rains lashed parts of the city including Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Punjagutta, Ameerpet, Yusufguda, Khairatabad, Begumpet and Secunderabad. Eye-witnesses said that there were strong winds in the city at the time of the accident. The CCTV footage released by the police showed clearly the speeding car hitting the Metro pillar.
