24-Hour Free Power On Trial Basis To TS Farmers

CM K Chandrashekar Rao announced 24-hour free power on a trial basis from Monday for farmers, as a step towards delivering on his promise of the same permanently.
Hyderabad | 5th November 2017
As part of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's "dream" of supplying free and high-quality power 24 hours a day to the agricultural sector, the Telangana government will supply round-the-clock power to the sector on a trial basis for 5-6 days from Monday.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao held discussions with TS Genco CMD D Prabhakar Rao in this regard on Sunday and instructed him to make the necessary arrangements.

Later, the TS Genco CMD parleyed with the officials concerned and said that Monday onwards power should be supplied 24 hours a day to farmers to all the districts.

A review would be taken up after five or six days, and arrangements would be made after that for round-the-clock power supply on a permanent basis, he added.

It may be recalled that KCR had earlier ordered 24-hours' free and quality power for the agriculture sector from March-April 2018.

While the state government has already ensured nine-hour free power supply for the farm sector, for this ambitious plan, the power companies (Genco, Transco, SPDCL and NPDCL) have made arrangements at a cost of Rs 12,000 crores to strengthen the generation, transmission and distribution systems.

Generation specifically has been significantly beefed up. Before the formation of Telangana, there were six 400 KV sub-stations capable of supplying 5,240 MW of power in the region. The electricity department estimated that to supply round-the-clock power to the farming and other sectors, the 400 KV sub-stations needed to supply 13,000 MW, and so started the construction of nine more sub-stations. So far, five of these nine additional 400 KV sub-stations, with a 3,980 MW capacity, have been constructed in Suryapet, Narsapur, Asupaka, Dindi, Maheswaram.
